Dogs put up with the shock when the “reward” is great enough.Įven at the highest settings, the shock collar will not always stop highly motivated dogs from running past the boundary. What Can Go Wrong With an Invisible Fence?Īs a veterinarian, I’ve observed five common problems associated with invisible fences.ġ. Often the strength of the electric shock can be turned up or down to suit the dog’s responsiveness. Many different brands and models are available, but they all work on the same theory-that dogs can be trained to avoid crossing a boundary when they hear a warning beep followed by an electric shock if they fail to turn back. I am using the term “invisible fence” to refer to any containment system that includes a border created by a buried wire, a transmitter and a receiver collar that can produce audible signals and electric shocks. Also, Dealer installed products tend to be better quality than retail brands.Invisible fences for dogs are advertised as being a relatively inexpensive way to give dogs safe access to the outdoors, but is that actually the case? Let’s look at the dangers associated with invisible fences and some better options that give dogs the freedom and enrichment they need. There usually isn’t much difference in the cost of a DogWatch® fence and other Dealer installed brands (such as Invisible Fence®.) Retail brands may seem to cost less than the Dealer installed brands, but they do not include installation (which can be challenging), training (which is very important), ongoing support or a good Warranty program. And hidden fences don’t need to be painted and don’t deteriorate like traditional fences. Plus, your dog cannot jump over, chew through or dig under a hidden fence. For example, you can contain your dog in your yard, but keep him out of a pool area, garden or driveway gate. In addition to costing less than traditional fences, hidden fences provide more flexibility and more secure containment than traditional fences. Contact us for a free consultation and an estimate for your property. The cost varies based on which system is right for you, the number of pets, the size of the property, how many sidewalk and driveway cuts, if you want internal “garden loops”, etc. The cost for a DogWatch Hidden Fence is almost always much less than traditional fencing. We will develop a plan to meet the specific training needs of your pet(s). After the initial training, your dog goes through a training session with you for a few minutes each day for about two weeks. ![]() We will initiate the training and provide instructions and support so you can complete and reinforce the training. After training, most dogs do not cross the hidden boundary they usually stop before the warning signal to avoid the correction. Your pet also learns that if he continues beyond the flags and warning alert, he will receive a mild correction (a stimulation from the collar). As your pet learns, the flags are slowly taken away. With training, the dog remembers the placement of the flags and associates the flags with the warning signal. The training includes teaching your pet to recognize the containment area boundaries through a combination of voice commands, audible warning signals from the receiver collar and visual flags that are set in the yard where the pet hears the warning alert. After we install the hidden fence, we work with you to train your pet. Training is an important part of the process. We also have “wireless” indoor units that do not require placement of a boundary wire. Contact your local DogWatch Dealer to discuss your options. With an indoor system, the hidden wire runs around your couch, under the lip of the counter, around the trash or across a doorway or wherever you need to create either a containment area or an “off-limits” area. Although there are differences in some of the product features, this is how all hidden fences work (DogWatch®, Invisible Fence® and other radio fence brands.) Through a training program, your pet learns to recognize his fence boundaries and learns to stop at the warning signal. If your pet travels further, he will receive a mild but safe stimulation (also called a “correction”) from the receiver collar. As your pet approaches the buried wire, the receiver collar emits a warning signal (audible or vibration). Your pet wears a lightweight, waterproof receiver collar that recognizes the radio signal. ![]() The buried wire carries a harmless, low level radio signal from a transmitter installed in your house or garage. Hidden fences are created by burying a ‘boundary wire’ a few inches underground around your property. ![]() I'm gonna make molasses to sweeten Liza Jane. I'm going up on the mountaintop, plant me a patch of cane. (Song performance 1 of 5: "Oh! Liza, Poor Gal" by Pete Seeger): It's a mountain banjo tune called Oh! Liza, Poor Gal. I fell in love with it, especially the long-necked banjos.Īs a matter of fact, let me ask you to play one of the first tunes I learned back in those days. He took me down to a square dance festival down in North Carolina.įor the first time in my life, I found there was music in my country that you never heard on the radio, and you didn't hear on the juke boxes, and in theaters. PETE SEEGER: I was about 16 years old back in 1935, and my father was a professor of musicology. But I don't get into an argument about the definition.ĪLAN: How did you first actually get interested in folk music? If I'm in London, why I'll drink the beer there, and if I'm in New York I'll drink the beer there. You mean that warm, sour stuff? Bring me some beer. Now you put a glass of London beer in front of a New Yorker, and he'll spit it out. Now you put a glass of New York beer in front of a Londoner and he spits it out. It's like two people arguing abut the definition of beer. So gradually they said well let's call it folk music.īut as I say, no two people agree on the term. These songs and music didn't fit into any neat category of art music nor popular music nor jazz. But the funny thing was, there were literally thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people who loved old time fiddling, ballads, banjo tunes, blues played on the guitar, spirituals and gospel hymns. In the United States, many people said you can't have folk music in the United States because you don't have any peasant class. So the peasantry had their music, and it was about a hundred years ago given the name "Folk music". The kings and queens had musicians in the castles, and that developed into symphony orchestras and what we call "Classical music" now.īut folks out in the country couldn't afford to pay for anybody else to make music. You see, way back in the old days, say in Europe of the Middle Ages, you had an aristocracy, and they could afford to pay for musicians. PETE SEEGER (GUEST): I think you have to accept the fact that hardly any two people, not even the experts, agree on a definition. Seeger, the obvious first question is, just how do you define folk music? Seeger's recordings, and we'll be talking with him about his life, his songs, and folk music in general. Now your host for Folk Music Worldwide, Alan Wasser.ĪLAN WASSER (HOST): We're privileged to have in our studios today the man who Alan Lomax calls "the best all-around folk performer," Mr. Showcasing the top performers and authorities in the field. "The original classical score by Mikael Karlsson works as a foundation for the war, the battlefields, the threat, and a theme for the antagonist," he says. The juxtaposition of those two elements – fun and terror – makes for a pretty sleek package." Additionally, Strandberg added some licensed jazz to the mix as well. ![]() The music is exciting and serious, I think, and will give a good backdrop for the story. They form their own mission and their own standards, and they get to know each other very well, but the environment that they are in is not in any way 'fun' or 'laid back.' Stefan felt that the score should remind us about this." "We went for a very dark, strong and sinister tone in the music, and some really hitting production on top of that. "It's a fun shooter, and the characters are loose-cannon, likable guys who find themselves in a war that maybe isn't really theirs, you know.like any soldier must at one point or other. "I was given the instruction to counter the laid back humorous quality of the game with some power and serious force," says Karlsson. Keeping Bad CompanyEarly work started almost two years ago with Karlsson and Strandberg bouncing ideas off each other as well as PMW's Tobias Wagner and Roman Vinuesa who also contributed to the project. "Games are still finding new genres to explore, and the level of innovation and ambition that has (to some level) gone out of Hollywood still lives in games," he says. Though not a gamer himself, the idea of working with the medium had definite appeal. Karlsson in turn was excited to work on a video game for the first time. He and Karlsson had known each other for years previously, and after seeing the resources that PMW had at their disposal, Strandberg knew the company could handle the kind of score the game would need. Please MusicWorks was originally introduced to Bad Company by audio director Stefan Strandberg of developer DICE. ![]() And these days he works from Please MusicWorks, the music production company he helped found. Not a bad record for a former liquor retailer from Sweden who first moved to New York in 2000. As mentioned, Karlsson writes concert music as well, and his works have been performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Instead, he more resembles the prototypical avant-garde artist, having written music for art installations, modern dance, and experimental films, all while holding a teaching position at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York City where he earned his master's degree. Mikael Karlsson is something of an anomaly among game composers, fitting neither the typical Hollywood mold nor the less flashy in-house composer type. "I write a lot of avant-garde concert music, so believe me… I could have gone much further out on any given limb had the narrative warranted it, but this is about the game and the player's experience is the main concern, and I think this score will both challenge and excite the gamers." We didn't want to completely go against all expectations, but we didn't want it to be just another flawless but pointless action score either." "Strings are so incredibly versatile, and second to a piano I think a string ensemble is the broadest small chamber ensemble that you can work with while staying reasonably within conventions," he continues. "If you want to be heard as a composer in that genre – if you want to affect the audience and push the story – you better do something that's out of the ordinary. "Sure, you rely on your company, but when you're in a situation with such enormous costs on the line, in the end there's only you." "Orchestral music for war games, as well as for action movies, is so very formulaic that it almost becomes a gesture or a symbol more than an actual musical statement," he continues. "It makes sense if you think of how isolating a battle really must be," composer Mikael Karlsson, explaining the reasoning behind the game's signature string quintet sound. Though there are a few comparatively traditional orchestral cues in the game, players may increasingly find that war sounds more like classical chamber music infused with African rhythms and percussion. This story naturally called for accompanying music, but what results is far from an ordinary game score. ![]() Instead, it includes an assigned value for typical Time test cannot bill a separate E/M service.
